The Liberal Democrats have scored an historic victory by taking the university city of Cambridge.

Lib Dem David Howarth, a university lecturer, won 19,152 votes, a majority of 4,339 over Labour's Anne Campbell.

Ms Campbell had represented Cambridge since 1992, winning her third term in 2001. She was seen as a committed Labour moderniser.

Mr Howarth became leader of Cambridge City Council in May 2000 and teaches law and economics at the university.

The Lib Dems hoped concern over university tuition fees and opposition to the war by many students would help them secure this seat.

The Liberal Party last held Cambridge in 1906.
