Cornwall has its own district heritage and identity, Mebyon Kernow said |
Mebyon Kernow, Cornwall's nationalist party, has launched its general election policies with a call for a legislative national assembly. The party is fielding candidates in all six of the county's constituencies. Other campaign priorities include fair funding for public services and affordable homes. The party believes Cornwall should have greater autonomy and leader Dick Cole said Mebyon Kernow would replace council tax with a local income tax. It also wants to restrict the number of second homes in the county by using planning controls. In the party's manifesto, Mebyon Kernow said it would fight for all the people of Cornwall and offered an alternative to London-centred parties. With its own distinct identity, language and heritage, Cornwall has the same right to self-determination as Scotland and Wales, the manifesto said.
