One of the closest general election campaigns in a generation saw the numbers of voters rise by over 2m people on 2005 to 29.6m. The last election saw a 61.0% turnout compared with 65.1% this time. The seat with the highest percentage turnout was Renfrewshire East on 77.3%. At the other end of the scale, six seats had less than a 50% turnout, with Hull West & Hessle coming bottom with 45.7%.
The rise in turnout was reflected right across the UK with the largest proportion of voters turning out in the South West and South East of England, 69.1% and 68.0% turnout respectively. The only area where turnout actually declined was in Northern Ireland. Numbers dropped by 7.8% to 57.6%. London and the North West of England saw the biggest increases in turnout. The capital saw a rise of 7.2%, with the tight battle in Richmond Park resulting in one of the highest turnouts of any seat at 76.9 %. The North West's turnout increased by 5.5% to 62.6%.
