MPs debate reform of the Commons

MPs spent most of Monday debating how to change the way they go about their business.

The expenses scandal led to soul-searching about how to improve the standing of Parliament.

A special, all-party committee was created to come up with ways of giving the Commons more power and influence over the government.

It suggested electing members of the respected select committees, and setting up a backbench business committee, to take control over some of the parliamentary timetable.

After the debate Andrew Wilson continued the discussion with Conservative MP Charles Walker and Labour MP Natascha Engel, who was a dissenting member of Tony Wright's committee.
