'Purnell made wrong judgement'

A series of cabinet ministers have come out in defence of Gordon Brown after the resignation of James Purnell.

In a letter to several newspapers, the work and pensions secretary said Mr Brown's continued leadership made a Tory victory "more, not less likely".

International Development Secretary Douglas Alexander said Mr Purnell's had "made the wrong judgement".
