UK First 'confident of prospects'

UK First said it hoped to win further backing at the next Westminster election

The UK First Party has predicted it will win support for its anti-European Union message in the 4 June elections.

Chairman Bruce Lawson said he hoped it could win 130,000 votes across the three regions in which it is standing.

He added that the party stood a good chance of claiming a seat in the East Midlands region.

Mr Lawson said UK First's "celebrity candidate" in the East of England, ex-One Man and His Dog presenter Robin Page, would also be a vote-winner.

"At the Cambridge County Show he attracted a lot of support," he added.

Mr Lawson - a former treasurer of the UK Independence Party who left after disagreements with UKIP's leadership - said UK First was concentrating on building its profile so it could make future gains at Westminster.

"We are trying to make people aware of us for the next election," he said.

"For a party which only formed in February we have done very well so far."

The party is also running candidates in the South East region.
