Brown: 'Commons decides on Speaker'

Prime Minister Gordon Brown has declined to give Michael Martin his backing, saying that "the decision about who is Speaker is a matter for the House of Commons - it could never be a matter for the government".

Mr Martin has been urged to stand down by Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg while MPs from all parties have signed a motion of no confidence in him.
