Lansley's advice for the Speaker

Shadow health secretary Andrew Lansley has said the Speaker Michael Martin needs to determine if he has the confidence of members of parliament, in private.

Speaking on The Politics Show, Mr Lansley said if the Speaker found he had no support, he should step down rather than being challenged in the chamber.

Mr Lansley said it would be a mistake to blame all responsibilities on Mr Martin but said the Speaker was responsible for much of the decision making that has lead to the expenses scandal.
