His comments follow newspaper reports that some MPs had claimed for items including dog food, light bulbs, mock Tudor beams and lawnmower repairs.
Speaking at the Royal College of Nursing conference in Harrogate, David Cameron said his party's aim was to build a ''responsible'' country.
