With Gordon Brown in the US on official business, deputy Labour leader Harriet Harman stood in for prime minister's questions.

Ms Harman clashed with shadow foreign secretary William Hague over the causes of the economic crisis, but she dismissed as "gossip" suggestions that she was "manoeuvring for the leadership".

Lib Dem treasury spokesman Vince Cable called on the government to use powers under existing legislation to strip the former chief executive of Royal Bank of Scotland, Sir Fred Goodwin, of his pension.
