Liberal Democrat treasury spokesman Vince Cable has branded the government's banking asset protection scheme a "complete betrayal of the taxpayer's interests".
The taxpayer-backed scheme will insure banks' riskier assets against further losses, aiming to clean up banks' balance sheets and encourage them to lend more freely.
But Mr Cable described it as a "real disgrace" and a "fraud".
