Foreign Secretary David Miliband has made a statement to MPs describing the situation in Gaza as "appalling".

Shadow foreign secretary William Hague said the Tories also "deeply regretted the loss of life on both sides".

The Labour Foreign Affairs Select Committee chairman, Mike Gapes, argued that the rejection of the UN resolution by both sides was "deplorable".

Meanwhile, Liberal Democrat spokesman Ed Davey criticised the US decision to abstain from the UN resolution, characterising it as a "diplomatic disaster".
