EU Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson is to return to government under Gordon Brown.
Derek Draper, a former advisor to Mr Mandelson, told the BBC that his old boss was a 'formidable politician'.
He described the appointment as 'absolutely fantastic news for the Labour Party and for the country'.
