Swing to Tories in Assembly vote

The London Assembly is elected at the same time as the capital's mayor

Results for the London Assembly show a 6.20% increase in the Tory vote across all 14 first-past the post seats.

Constituency results for Bexley and Bromley and Havering and Redbridge saw 12 and 13-point swings to the Tories.

But Labour was also up by 3.36% across all 14, and the party's Navin Shah won Brent and Harrow from the Tories.

The Liberal Democrat vote was down by 4.70% across all 14 seats, while the British National Party gained its first seat on the London Assembly.

The BNP passed the 5% voter threshold to take a seat at City Hall.

But the United Kingdom Independence Party's share fell by 7.05%.

The Minister for London, Tessa Jowell, said there had been "some unexpected surprises there that demonstrate the loyalty of the Labour vote".

As well as winning Brent and Harrow, Gordon Brown's party held its remaining seats.

Joanne McCartney retained Enfield and Haringey, Jeanette Arnold held North East, as did John Briggs in City and East, Len Duvall in Greenwich and Lewisham and Val Shawcross in Lambeth and Southwark.

For the Conservatives, Richard Barnes hung onto Ealing and Hillingdon, Brian Coleman held Barnet and Camden, Tony Arbour retained South West and Roger Evans was re-elected in Havering and Redbridge.

Kit Malthouse won the previously Tory-held West Central, and Steve O'Connell kept Croydon and Sutton for the party. Former Subiton Tory MP Richard Tracey was elected in Merton and Wandsworth, as was James Cleverly in Bexley and Bromley.
