TV quiz shows under MPs' scrutiny

Viewers are changed even if they do not get through to the quiz shows
A parliamentary inquiry is to be held into interactive television quiz shows after complaints that viewers are being ripped off.

The Commons Culture Committee is to examine whether further regulation is needed after the growth of channels like ITV Play and Quiz Call.

The MPs want to investigate how viewers' calls are handled.

Phone regulator ICSTIS, the Gambling Commission and the broadcast regulator Ofcom are already investigating.

Calls can cost 75p, even if callers do not get through to the shows.

MPs want to question whether the public is giving enough information on the cost of calls, and their chances of winning.

The committee will also look at the impact on viewers, with reports that some have become "hooked" on the shows and have run up massive phone bills.

In addition, the committee wants to know how much money is being raised for the broadcasters, with ITV Play said to be on course to make a profit of 20m in its first year.
