Tory leader David Cameron was among the Beckhams' guests

According to society magazine Tatler, he and his wife Samantha, are the UK's most sought-after party guests.

The couple have taken the magazine's top slot from model Kate Moss - and left celebrities such as Madonna, Mick Jagger and Liz Hurley trailing.

The magazine says the Camerons are "courted by every aspiring hostess".

The pair's most recently-publicised dalliance with the glitterati came at David and Victoria Beckham's pre-World Cup Full Length and Fabulous Ball.

The couple, who were reportedly invited by Sun editor Rebekah Wade, mingled at the Beckham's Hertfordshire mansion with guests including Wayne Rooney and Ozzy Osbourne.

Topping the chart marks a huge leap for the couple who did not appear at all in Tatler's 2005 annual list of the "Hot 100" party animals in Britain, which was then headed by Kate Moss.

Allegations of drug abuse and the super-model's on-off relationship with Pete Doherty has seen her fall out of favour.

Nevertheless, Jefferson Hack, her ex-partner and father of her young daughter, and his current girlfriend Anouck Lepere, have made an appearance at number five on the list.

Pirates of the Caribbean actor Tom Hollander and his girlfriend, James Blunt's ex, Dixie Chassay are second.

Harrods heiress Camilla Al Fayed is third, followed by make-up artist Jemma Kidd and her husband, the Earl of Mornington.

Sting and Trudie Styler are in the top ten, along with Keira Knightley and Arpad Busson, ex-partner of super-model Elle Macpherson, who finds herself at number 11.
