Sixty-seven Labour rebel MPs backed an amendment to the government's controversial Education Bill that would have allowed parents to decide if their children's secondary schools could opt out of local authority control and become independent trusts. A combination of Labour loyalists and Conservatives saw off the challenge in the Commons.
