 Lie detector tests could be introduced for sex offenders |
Sex offenders released from jail could face lie-detector tests to check they are abiding by bail conditions. The polygraph tests have been piloted by volunteers in 10 areas across England but under the Management of Offenders Bill they will be compulsory.
Conditions applying to sex offenders can include being told to stay away from schools and playgrounds.
The bill, unveiled in the Queen's Speech, will also extend electronic tagging for offenders on bail.
And it will bring in a new system of "day fines" which will take into account ability to pay as well as the gravity of an offence.
Ministers say the bill would help reduce re-offending by improving offender management.
An ombudsman to oversee the operation of a new National Offender Management Service will also be put on a statutory footing.
