At-a-glance: Blair news conference
| | Tony Blair is giving his latest monthly news conference on Monday. Here are the key points so far. Crime - Mr Blair said he would be setting out a strong political "forward agenda" on law and order and other "bread and butter domestic issues"
- Crime had fallen 30% since 1997 but challenges remained, he said
- From December, courts would be able to tell juries about defendants' related previous convictions
- Plans would be unveiled next month for "reinventing" community policing, ensuring officers were not only visible on the streets but had the right powers
- Mr Blair defended the planned shake-up of gambling, saying that although there could be more casinos, the new laws would allow them to be properly regulated
- He also defended the new licensing laws, which could allow 24-hour drinking, saying they worked elsewhere in Europe and there would be measures to target the minority of troublemakers
Asylum and immigration - Asked about claims that Britain is to drop its national veto in the EU on asylum and immigration, Mr Blair insisted the government would not participate in anything which gave up British control over its borders
- The prime minister said the changes would allow Britain more easily to introduce the European measures it wanted while only opting into the ones it liked
- Britain's "red lines" on issues like tax, immigration and defence were protected in the European constitution
Iraq - Mr Blair said the Iraqi elections would be an "important moment" and it was important terrorists were not allowed to scupper them
- The decision to send soldiers from the Black Watch to the region south of Baghdad was a "limited deployment for a limited period of time", he said
- The prime minister said global terrorism could not be defeated by weapons alone but by highlighting efforts to bring greater stability, security and democracy - something that could hit terrorist recruitment
Middle East peace - Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's plan for disengagement from occupied Gaza, which is being debated in the Israeli parliament on Monday, was an "opportunity" for getting new movement into the Middle East peace process, said Mr Blair
- He argued there could be a viable Palestinian state.
