Police and electoral workers came under attack from petrol and paint bombs in Northern Ireland on election night. Staff carrying ballot boxes were hit by a shower of petrol bombs in several areas of Londonderry.
In one incident an electoral officer was showered with glass when a polling station in the Carnhill area was attacked.
Police said one man was set alight by a petrol bomb thrown in Creagan. All ballot boxes made it to counts intact.
Ballot boxes were being escorted by police from polling stations in the Shantallow and the Ballymagroaty areas of the city when they were attacked.
There were no reports of any injuries during the incident but it was estimated up to 14 petrol bombs were thrown.
In Creagan around 30 petrol bombs were thrown.
A police spokesman said a total of 50 petrol bombs and 16 paint bombs had been thrown during Thursday night.
Violence flared in Londonderry last November as ballot boxes were removed from a polling station in the city.
