Campbell to face MPs' questions

Alastair Campbell, Tony Blair's former press chief, is to give evidence to a powerful Commons committee on the use of spin by the government.

The committee is looking at how Downing Street can lose its "image of spin".

It follows a report, published in January, looking into the way government spin doctors were operating.

His appearance in front of the select committee will be the first time he has faced questions from MPs since his resignation last year.

As well as asking him about his strategies as the prime minister's chief spin doctor, committee members will also be questioning Mr Campbell about how effective a new government approach to communications is likely to be.

The role Mr Campbell once held - as both Downing Street press secretary and as a permanent secretary for running government communications - has now been split into two posts.

BBC political correspondent Paul Wilenius said the appearance of the forthright Mr Campbell would "be worrying" for many politicians.

He said: "Every time Alastair Campbell has appeared before a select committee fireworks happen."

The committee was set up following January's report by Bob Phillis, Guardian Media Group chief executive, which was commissioned in the wake of the row over ex-spin doctor Jo Moore.

She had to quit months after sending an e-mail on the day of the 11 September terror attacks suggesting this was a good opportunity for the government to "bury" bad news.

Last month it was announced Mr Campbell will host his own TV interview series for Channel Five later this year.

The former Downing Street director of communications will interview major figures from the world of sport, politics and business.

Mr Campbell quit his post last year to spend more time with his family.

He has been touring the country recently delivering a series of one-man lectures on his time in politics.
