Date of birth

16 April 1944

Political profile

Llew Smith was elected to the Commons in 1992, having served for eight years as an MEP.

He has some of the most daunting predecessors of any MP. Previous incumbents of his seat include Michael Foot and Nye Bevan.

He is a member of the Campaign Group and has defied government whips on many occasions.

He is an old-fashioned socialist who follows his own campaigns with great energy and passion, even when his views place him in a small minority.

His sallies against the private finance initiative, nuclear weapons and war all find some sympathy, but he fights lonelier battles in Wales.

He is a pro-English language campaigner and was a leading opponent of the Welsh Assembly.
