| Monday, 7 January, 2002, 13:18 GMT Online voting on the cards ![]() Will the internet tempt younger people to vote? Britons will be able to vote via the internet under plans to shake-up the political system being considered by Leader of the Commons Robin Cook. In an interview with The Guardian newspaper Mr Cook said the plan was one of a package of measures intended to modernise the political system to boost the proportion of people - especially under-40s - who vote in elections. A pilot scheme for voting online is to take place in the local elections this Spring, with Mr Cook saying that voting via the internet might be in place by the time of the next general election. Other plans include allowing the public the chance to email in their comments on proposals put out for consultation. He also wants to give the select committees greater independence in his efforts to modernise the "Dickensian" culture at the House of Commons. Online streaming The measures are seen as a response to the tumbling turnout in the last General Election - when just 59% of those eligible, decided to vote. He told the paper: "I suspect for anybody under 40 polling day is the only point in the year when they actually see a pencil stub, and that's probably why it's tied to a piece of string, because it's so rare and they might pocket it as a souvenir." It would be a "tough call" to be ready for the next General Election - and it could only go ahead if secure systems can be arranged. He is also keen for more Westminster Hall debates and committees to be streamed on the internet. |
