The Prime Minister should get the euro issue off the agenda.

He should call a referendum and let the British people say "no thanks".

Whilst the major economies inside the eurozone have suffered from being locked into the single currency, our government has been able to implement policies which are in our best interests.

So whilst German unemployment rises towards four million and their economy sits in recession, we have managed to avoid the latter and escape the worst effects of the global slowdown.

Britain can prosper with the pound.

Labour opposition

The government will not win a referendum on the euro in this parliament.

Public, trade union and business opinion has remained consistently against our membership of the euro.

Of Labour voters, 63% oppose membership of the euro.

So opposition to the euro does not solely reside in the Conservative Party.

Many of us within the Labour Party believe that the euro will damage our economy and is deeply undemocratic.

Two thirds of the public and businesses agree.

We need a chance to settle this issue.
