Ms Hoey has previously examined how German stadia are able to provide modern "safe" standing areas. Premiership clubs have had all-seater stadia since the Taylor report into football safety in the wake of the Hillsborough disaster. Crushing led to the deaths of 96 Liverpool fans during the 1989 FA cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest. Ms Hoey is backing an all-party call for clubs to follow the German model and incoporate areas of "safe standing". Pop concerts She is among 13 MPs who have signed the Commons motion arguing that in Germany supporters are allowed to stand "safely and legitimately without any inconvenience to seated spectators in other parts of the ground". The motion says tens of thousands of people stand every week at games of rugby union, rugby league, horse-racing and pop concerts. There have also been problems at grounds such as Liverpool's Anfield and Manchester United's Old Trafford where many fans insist on standing in seated areas. But the Hillsborough Families' Support Group has fiercely opposed any return to standing. The 13 to sign the motion are Labour's Kate Hoey, Keith Vaz, Frank Field, Roger Godsiff, Alan Simpson, John Austin, Rob Marris, David Stewart, Terry Lewis, the Liberal Democrats' Mike Hancock and Nigel Jones, and Tories Nicholas Winterton and Mark Field. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top UK Politics stories now: Links to more UK Politics stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||
