Complaints about NHS care have risen but remain low

Complaints about the health service have risen sharply but remain low.

New government figures show that since 1994-95, the number of official complaints received by the Health Service Commissioner soared by 52% in England, 36% in Scotland and 33% in Wales.

The figures were revealed by Welsh Health Minister Win Griffiths in a Commons written reply.

He wrote: "The number of complaints referred to the commissioner is low - 149 in Wales, 196 in Scotland and 2,315 in England."

He added: "Relatively small numerical changes, therefore, can produce larger percentage movements year on year than are justified by the trend."
