Gritting crews were attacked on Tuesday

The Roads Service hopes a full gritting service will resume in Londonderry's Creggan estate on Thursday.

The agency had withdrawn the evening service from parts of the estate after one of its gritters was attacked by a gang throwing stones on Tuesday night.

One resident said she was disgusted by those responsible for the attacks.

"It's a disgrace, the gritters are just trying do their job. We've old people and wains living here and we need the roads to be safe."

It is understood local people have set up a rota to ensure that no more lorries are attacked.

Noel McCartney, from Community Restorative Justice, said it is based on a model which ran in Ballymagroarty last year.

"In a meeting with the Road Service we decided that an hour before the lorries were due to go in to the area we would check that it was safe.

"If we thought there were any dangers we would contact them before they went in."
