Snow and ice causes travel delays across north west

Snow is continuing to fall in Derry this morning

The runway at City of Derry airport has reopened but snow and ice are continuing to cause problems for travellers in the north west.

Monday morning's flight to Dublin was cancelled, and a number of incoming flights are now behind schedule.

There is black ice on many roads, including the Foyle bridge, and there is severe disruption to bus services.

Some roads are gritted but motorists have been warned to drive with extreme care.

Ulsterbus has said services to estates in Derry, including Ballymagroarty, Creggan, Gobnascale and Ballyarnett, are badly affected.

Denis Wilson from Roads Service said the weather is bad across Northern Ireland, but it is particularly treacherous in the north west.

"We've got snow on the roads, we've got black ice, and things are really very bad at the moment.

"We're trying to salt 4,300 miles of road in Northern Ireland, and that's a considerable undertaking.

"It's only about 27% of the road network, but it carries about 80% of the travelling public," he said.

Several schools in the north and west have been closed for the day, including:

Richmond Primary School, Ballygawley;
St Mary's Primary School, Ballygawley
St Patrick's Primary School, Gortin;
St Mary's Primary School near Cookstown;
Cookstown High School;
St Teresa's Primary School, Loughmacrory (the school will remain closed on Tuesday)
St Joseph's Primary School, Galbally, Dungannon
Knockloughrim Primary School, Magherafelt
Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School, Greencastle
St Caireall's Primary School, Castlederg
Strabane High School
Barrack Street Boys' Primary School, Strabane
