It is understood 25 job losses will be announced at the plant |
Eighteen jobs are to go at Seagate Technologies in Londonderry, the company has said. Seagate, which employs about 1,400 at the Springtown site, said it would try to achieve the redundancies on a voluntary basis. The firm announced a restructuring plan of the global workforce on Wednesday which will include a reduction of about 1,100 employees or 2.5% of staff. A spokesperson said the company "regretted the decision". "This action is required to position the company to be cash flow and earnings positive within its fiscal year 2010 which begins on 1 July," they said. The bulk of the job losses are expected to be in high-paid posts in management and engineering. In January, workers in the factory had their hours cut by 10% because of the economic downturn. Their hours were only restored in full in April. Similar announcements have been made in Seagate's factories across the world.
