The MLA says elderly people will die from fuel poverty

Elderly people will die this winter because they cannot afford to heat their homes, according to the DUP MLA William Hay.

The government is to announce a billion pound package to help people struggling to pay their energy bills.

But Mr Hay said more needed to be done on a local level.

"People are going to be dead this winter, because our senior citizens will have to make a decision whether to buy food or turn on the heat," he said.

"This is the sad, sad reality we have now arrived at in Northern Ireland, and we as public representatives need to be seen to be doing something to try and resolve some of these issues," he said.
