| Saturday, 28 October, 2000, 08:53 GMT 09:53 UK Power cut alert before storms ![]() Northern Ireland resident: Preparing for power cuts. Northern Ireland Electricity has issued a warning that power may be cut due to storms predicted by weather forecasters. NIE spokesman Robin Greer said the extensively rural nature of the province's power network meant it was vulnerable in the event of bad weather. Forecasters have predicted storms with winds up to force six or seven to hit Northern Ireland on Saturday and to last through Sunday.
"If you've trees falling over and if you've debris flying in the wind, hitting cables, then you're going to have faults. "There is so only much you can do to an electricity system but in a rural network, severe weather will inevitably cause damage. "We hope it won't and we've worked to minimise it but it can happen, that is the reality of a rural network." |
