Former Republic of Ireland international Roy Keane may have had a less successful career as a manager but it has not stopped him entering the Sunday Times Sport Rich List as the second wealthiest boss currently operating in the English and Irish game.

Keane, with an estimated total wealth of £30m lags behind only current English coach Fabio Capello, whose worth is around £34m.

Also making an appearance high on the list is Republic of Ireland manager, Giovanni Trapattoni, 71, believed to worth about £18m, and fifth on the list.

He is currently paid £2m a year for the part-time role by the Football Association of Ireland, at least some of which is believed to be bankrolled by Irish entrepreneur Denis O'Brien.

Despite his success as a player for AC Milan in the 1960s, the vast bulk of Trapattoni's wealth comes from his time as a coach, when he has made his name as one of the most successful in Europe.

He won the league title six times with Juventus and once with Internazionale before also winning the championship in Germany, Portugal and Austria.

Cloud

Keane's managerial career also started well, taking Sunderland from the lower reaches of the Championship to promotion to the Premiership in his first season in charge.

According to the Sunday Times, he earned about £2m a year in the post, significantly less than the salary he was able to command when he retired as a player.

The former Manchester United star left the North-East club under a cloud before re-emerging as the Ipswich boss at the beginning of this season.

His time there has been less successful, with the club drawing a preponderance of games and being unable to climb out of the bottom half of the table.

Keane is one of five managers among the 14 who make it on to the Sport Rich List who have a connection with Manchester United.

Charity

The others are Keane's former boss at United Sir Alex Ferguson, 68, in third place and worth £24m, £1m for every year he has spent as manager of the club.

He is currently on a £3.6m annual rolling contract.

Steve Bruce, another former United captain and current manager of Sunderland, is ranked 10th equal, alongside Mark Hughes the former Old Trafford striker and one-time manager of Manchester City and Blackburn Rovers.

The fifth red on the list is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, currently boss of the United reserves.

He retired from playing in 2007 and following the precedent set by former Irish striker Niall Quinn by donating the £2m proceeds of his testimonial to charity.
