Arlene Foster was selected unanimously |
Assembly member Arlene Foster has been selected as the DUP's candidate for Fermanagh and South Tyrone in the next Westminster election. The enterprise minster was selected unanimously by members of the local DUP Association at a meeting in Crilly Orange Hall. Speaking after the meeting, Mrs Foster said she "was delighted". She said it was "a great honour to be asked to fight for the people of Fermanagh and South Tyrone". Mrs Foster said: "The result of the last Westminster election coupled with the recent by-election in Enniskillen demonstrates that only the DUP is strong enough to return Fermanagh and South Tyrone to pro-Union hands. "We are the leading party in the constituency and command widespread support from all classes and backgrounds of people. I hope to continue building the broad coalition of voters who back the DUP." Sinn Fein's Michelle Gildernew holds the seat, polling 18,638 votes (38.2%) in the 2005 Westminster election. In 2005, Mrs Foster got 14,056 votes (28.8%).
