Dissidents are 'targeting firms'

Gerry Adams
The Sinn Fin president was speaking at a news conference

Gerry Adams has accused dissident republicans of engaging in a range of criminal activities including extortion and intimidation in west Belfast.

The Sinn Fin president, who is MP for the area, says gangs are targeting innocent families and businesses.

Mr Adams also called for more co-operation with the police.

"In terms of all of the criminality and the public safety issues in this area, the PSNI has a big job to do as well," he said.

"And we would be quite critical of their performance in some of these matters.

"But in terms of those who are using republicanism and the names of these groups as flags of convenience for their own actions, we're making it very clear that it's intolerable and it has to stop."

Mr Adams was speaking at a news conference organised by his party in west Belfast.
