Orde on shortlist for top Met job

Sir Hugh Orde is on the shortlist to be the next head of the Met

Sir Hugh Orde has been shortlisted to be the next head of the Metropolitan Police (Met).

Nine senior police officers applied for the post which was vacated by Sir Ian Blair earlier this year.

Sir Hugh began his career in policing with the Met in 1977, and rose to the rank of deputy assistant commissioner.

He was made chief constable of the Police Service of Northern Ireland in 2002 and received a knighthood three years later.

Sir Hugh joins three other senior police officers on the shortlist for the post of Metropolitan Police Commissioner.

The other three candidates are the Met's acting commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson, the chief constable of West Midlands Sir Paul Scott-Lee, and Merseyside chief constable Bernard Hogan-Howe.
