American representatives from the Commission on Security and Co-operation in Europe are hearing testimonies from relatives of Patrick Finucane and Rosemary Nelson. Mr Finucane was shot dead in front of his wife and children at his north Belfast home by loyalist paramilitaries in 1989. Loyalists also admitted responsibility for the car bomb attack which killed Lurgan solicitor Rosemary Nelson on 15 March 1999. Allegations of collusion between loyalist paramilitaries and members of the security forces have been made by the families of the murdered lawyers and human rights groups.
The relatives are being accompanied by representatives of two human rights groups, British Irish Rights Watch and the Committee on the Administration of Justice, who have been campaigning for inquiries into the two murders The hearing coincides with a number of events which are being organised to mark the first anniversary of Ms Nelson's death on Wednesday. |
