 Three teenagers were killed in the accident |
Three teenagers, including twin brothers, have been killed in a car crash in east Belfast. The accident, which involved one vehicle, took place on the Ballygowan Road at about 0100 BST on Saturday.
The 19-year-old twins were passengers in the car which was being driven by their 18-year-old friend.
It is believed all three were from the east Belfast area. Inspector John Adams said police officers who attended the scene were "devastated".
Inspector Adams said: "I have spoken to the officers who attended the scene and they were completely devastated.
'Shock'
"Three young lives have been lost unnecessarily, their families are going to be devastated."
Strangford MP Iris Robinson expressed shock and sorrow at the news of the deaths.
"This is an absolute tragedy, particularly at holiday time, and I want to express my sincere sympathy to the family circles," she said.
"Words cannot describe the anguish that has descended on the families at the loss of young people at such an early age. My thoughts and prayers are with their loved ones."
The Ballygown Road which was closed for a time after the accident has since re-opened.
The three deaths bring to 38 the number of people killed on Northern Ireland's roads this year.
