Public transport is to be disrupted by the strike |
Up to 50,000 public sector workers could take part in strike action in Northern Ireland on Tuesday. More details of action planned by workers across the UK over pension changes have been released.
Unions in Northern Ireland expect it to have a big impact on services, including schools and public transport.
The dispute is over the age at which workers can retire on a full pension. Currently it is 60 - but the government wants to change it to 65.
The unions feel they are being treated unfairly and have planned a number of rallies across Northern Ireland on Tuesday.
They have said if the government ignore their concerns they plan to take further action.
Transport company Translink has already warned that bus and rail services in the province will be severely disrupted by the strike.
Among the unions expected to go on the picket lines on Tuesday are Unison, Nipsa, ATGWU, Amicus, TSSA, TGWU and Siptu.
Brian Campfield: "Major impact on public services expected" |
Brian Campfield, of the Public Service Alliance (Nipsa), said staff from schools, council offices and the Housing Executive would be among those taking part.
"We expect it to have a major impact on the delivery of public services next Tuesday," he said.
The Transport and General Workers' Union's Albert Mills said the workers wanted to be treated fairly.
"What we would hope would happen is that John Prescott would see sense and give us exactly the same deal as he applied to the civil service, the Ministry of Defence and the health service," he said.
About 1.5m workers across the UK are expected to take part in the action.
