Capita will take on the insurance firm's call centre in Clarendon Dock and its staff, who will transfer on their current terms and conditions.

Prudential had announced in April its Belfast operation was closing as part of a �40m cost-saving exercise.

Rosie Harris, chief operating officer at the Prudential, said the announcement was good news for staff.

"What this will mean to staff is that they will be transferred to another large company which has more job opportunities in Northern Ireland than the Pru can offer," she said.

"They will continue on their existing terms and conditions and they will enjoy the chance to go on to new work. So over all I think it is a very positive message for staff."

Capita's current operations in Belfast include the provision of support services for the BBC and the Northern Ireland Civil Service.
