About 30 jobs are to be lost at the Arntz Belting factory in Londonderry, the engineering union Amicus has said.

Union officials said the company - which makes fan belts - is planning to transfer one of its departments to a plant in Germany.

It is understood staff were told about the cuts on Friday, but so far the company has not made any official announcement.

Management is due to meet officials from Amicus on Wednesday.

Arntz Belting employs about 240 people at its plant at Pennyburn Pass in Derry.

The parent company, Arntz Optibelt, also has a plant - A&M Belting - at Letterkenny in County Donegal.

The Arntz Optibelt group employs about 1,200 employees around the world.
