Rights body criticises government
Brice Dickson
Human Rights Commission wants Brice Dickson's successor appointed
The NI Human Rights Commission has criticised the government for failing to appoint new members and a successor to Chief Commissioner Brice Dickson.

The terms of office of Mr Dickson and three other commissioners ended at the end of February.

Up to 10 new commissioners were expected to be in place before the announcement of the general election.

However, the organisation is now worried that it could be autumn before the posts are filled.

It said the Northern Ireland Office had confirmed that it would be unable to proceed with the appointments and the designation of additional powers to the commission until after the election.

Three years ago the commission had 13 members.

However, only two are currently in place - Lady Christine Eames and Kevin McLaughlin.

The commission has suffered a number of resignations and withdrawals and has been the target of widespread political criticism.

Later this week it is to give evidence to the principal human rights organ of the United Nations, the Commission on Human Rights.
