Illegal street trading clampdown

Fake DVDs have been seized from Belfast street traders
A major clampdown on illegal street traders in the run up to Christmas has been launched by Belfast City Council.

In the first two weeks of December, council officers seized goods from 54 illegal street traders in the city centre.

Goods seized have included batteries, toys and counterfeit DVDs and CDs.

Environmental Health Officer Jonathan Brice urged people to check that toys were safe before giving them to children.

He said people should:

  • Look for toys made to British Standards and which have the CE mark on them;
  • Check for age warnings;
  • Check toys for sharp points and edges and test for well sewn seams;
  • Be certain that small parts such as noses, eyes or hair cannot be pulled or bitten off;
  • Look for a label stating the trade name and an address.
