A unanimous vote was taken to continue the strike action |
Civil Service workers striking at nine vehicle testing centres have voted to continue their action. The move came after some staff members asked for reassurances about strategy.
About 120 striking Nipsa members gathered at Lisburn vehicle testing centre in County Antrim on Friday to take a vote over continuing strike action.
After an hour, a unanimous vote was taken to continue the strike action.
The general secretary of Nipsa said civil servants felt that taking strike action was the only way they could air their grievances.
John Corey said union representatives wanted to negotiate, but felt they were being ignored by the government.
Pay package
"What are workers to do? Workers who are low paid, workers who have been denied any pay increase since April 2003?" he asked.
"This trade union wants only to sit down across the table with senior management in the civil service and negotiate a fair resolution to this dispute."
Nipsa has been involved in strike action since December over what they said was the government's refusal to give civil service staff any cost of living increases in rates of pay since April last year.
The government has imposed a pay package which will add 3.67% to the wage bill of the Northern Ireland Civil Service.
However, union officials say that was part of a pre-agreed increment and takes no account of the rise in the cost of living.
