Health enthusiasts will be dancing in the streets as Belfast hosts a week long festival to encourage more active lifestyles.

The city's council has called on couch potatoes to come dancing as part of several special activity get fit events.

Belfast's Week of Dance began at the weekend, with more than 60 events from salsa to Scottish dancing and ballroom to disco.

For the more adventurous, bellydancing is also on the event list.

Active Living co-ordinator Karen Hamilton said the Week of Dance was one of four special activity weeks planned by Belfast City Council.

And you do not have to be Fred Astaire to give it a go. Everyone, regardless of age or ability, is invited to "shake their booty," said the council.

The events include Learn to Dance in a Weekend workshops organised by Salsa Belfast; cheerleading, with the Belfast Giants G Crew; daily dance displays in Cornmarket and the hugely popular tea dances in the Ulster Hall.

There will also be a gala bellydancing performance, From Cleopatra to Shakira by ISIS Dance; Scottish Highland Dance workshops; the Northern Ireland Ballroom Dancing Championships; the Active Living Disco Dance competition and and introductory classes in hip hop, breakdance, salsa and African.

The Belfast Week of Dance is part of the World Health Organisation's Healthy Cities European Multi-City Action Plan for Active Living.
