Police call time on lock-ins

Public houses were found serving after hours
More than 100 people were drinking after hours in one County Londonderry pub at the weekend, police have said.

Licensed premises in Maghera were checked by police early on Saturday and four were found operating outside hours.

Inspector Harry Johnston said locals had been complaining about lock-ins in the area.

He said in one of the four premises found operating after hours, 140 patrons were found inside.

'Hostility'

Inspector Johnston said the area had seen a decrease in alcohol related offences and that they were keen to see this trend continue.

However, he said police encountered opposition during their operation.

"It is sad to record that my officers were met with considerable hostility from the patrons of some of the licensed premises that were inspected, and a police report is currently being prepared on the matter," he said.

He added that more inspections would be carried out in the future.
