Team rescues injured man

Weather turned bad in the mountains as the helicopter arrived
Rescuers spent almost five hours carrying a man down a mountain after they were hit by severe weather conditions.

Members of the Mourne Mountain Rescue team braved blizzard conditions to bring the injured man down on a stretcher.

Strong winds and snow forced a helicopter from Dublin to turn back when it was scrambled to the rescue in County Down.

The man was walking on his own in the Mourne Mountains when he fell shortly before 1500 GMT on Saturday and hurt his ankle.

A doctor and his friend who were also out walking came across the man.

The police rescue team was also called in and a helicopter was tasked from Dublin.

However, as the helicopter arrived, bad weather and falling snow forced it to turn back.

David Goddard from the Mourne Mountain Rescue Team said the operation was hampered by the worsening weather.
