1,500 passengers were lost in the Titanic sinking |
A private museum in Belfast has paid more than 28,000 for a postcard-sized lunch menu from the Titanic. The rare menu was among 14 items from the ill-fated vessel which were sold at Sotheby's auction house in London on Tuesday.
The menu was given to the wife of a senior officer on board the ship, Charles Lightoller, before he left Southampton on the luxury liner.
Its price, 28,800 was over twice its pre-sale estimate of 12,000.
The menu included a variety of foods such as Consomm Mirrette, Salmon and Golden Plover on Toast.
A Sotheby's spokeswoman said the auction house was delighted with the sale.
"We knew the menu was extremely rare but obviously it still doubled its pre-sale estimate which is very exciting."
Other items sold included a manuscript written by Mr Lightoller, who was the Second Officer on the ship, which was also bought by the Belfast museum.
He was the last person to be taken aboard the rescue ship Carpathia and a letter to his wife, explaining that he had to remain in America to assist with the official inquiry into the tragedy, was also sold at auction.
