More armoured Land Rovers needed in Iraq |
The army is sending a convoy of its Land Rovers from Northern Ireland to Iraq to help protect troops on the ground. The 178 armoured vehicles were loaded on to a ferry at Belfast's Pollock Dock on Thursday, ready for transport later in the evening.
An army spokesman said the Land Rovers, all drawn from reserve stock or currently surplus to requirement in Northern Ireland, would give much-needed and potentially life-saving protection to army patrols in southern Iraq.
"We are very pleased to be able to help our colleagues serving in Iraq," the spokesman said.
"A review and re-distribution of our vehicle stock in Northern Ireland has enabled us to release these vehicles."
There are 14,000 military personnel in Northern Ireland and a vehicle reserve is still held being retained.
