Major dissident operation 'foiled'
The explosives were found in a white van at an outhouse
Police in the Irish Republic say they have foiled a major operation by dissident republicans following the discovery of 500lbs of explosives near the border with Northern Ireland.

Six men are being questioned in connection with the discovery at an an outhouse at Inniskeen, County Monaghan, on Friday.

Four of the men were arrested at the scene following the discovery of the explosives in a van.

Gardai have sealed off the area surrounding the outhouse.

Two other men were arrested during a number of follow-up searches in the Dundalk area.

The men, aged in their early 20s to mid 40s, have been taken various garda stations in counties Louth and Meath.

They can be held for up to 72 hours under the Offences Against the State Act before they are either charged or released.

A man was arrested by police in Northern Ireland on Saturday in connection with the explosives find.

A number of items were recovered for forensic examination following searches in Newry and Armagh on Friday.

A further quantity of explosives was seized near Tallanstown in County Louth.
