Ex-Barnardo's staff deny child abuse
The pair appeared at Belfast Crown Court
Two former care workers at a children's home run by Barnardo's in Belfast have pleaded not guilty to a total of 166 charges of child abuse.

Sarah Jane Margaret Hewitt, 67, from Coast Road, Drain's Bay near Larne and Robert George Anderson, 43, formerly of Hillhead Road, Ballycarry, but now living in England, appeared at Belfast Crown Court on Friday.

Ms Hewitt faces a total of 105 charges, while Mr Anderson faces 61 charges.

Demolished

The alleged offences include rape, indecent assault, gross indecency, cruelty and assault of boys and girls in their care in a four-year period between 1977 and 1981.

The children and young people were residents of the former Macedon Children's Home at Hazelbank Park in Whiteabbey.

It was run by the charity, Barnardo's, and was demolished about 20 years ago.

A group of the alleged victims were in court on Friday and several of them broke down in tears as their names were mentioned.

The trial will begin early next year.
